Past Paper Practice

Work through real exam questions under timed conditions

What the Research Says

Past paper practice is the closest you can get to the real exam. It combines retrieval practice, time management, and exam technique in a single activity. Research consistently shows that students who practise with real exam papers score significantly higher than those who only revise notes.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Download past papers from AQA — Get papers and mark schemes from the AQA website (search “AQA past papers”). Start with the most recent.
  2. 2
Complete under timed conditions — Set a 2-hour timer. No notes, no phone. Simulate real exam conditions as closely as possible.
  3. 3
Mark your answers — Use the official mark scheme. Be honest about where you did and didn’t meet the criteria. Note which topics you dropped marks on.
  4. 4
Target your weak areas — If you lost marks on forces and stresses, go back and revise that topic. Then attempt a different past paper question on the same topic.
Example: Section-by-Section Approach

If a full 2-hour paper feels overwhelming, start with individual sections. Complete Section A in 20 minutes, mark it, then revise your weak areas before attempting Section B another day. Build up to full papers in the final 3 weeks.

Common Pitfalls

  • Doing papers with notes open — This defeats the purpose. Close everything and simulate the real exam.
  • Not marking properly — Skimming the mark scheme misses the detail. Read every marking point and check if your answer actually earns it.
  • Only doing one paper — One paper is not enough. Do at least 3–4 full papers plus additional questions on weak topics.

When to Use This

Start section-by-section practice 4–5 weeks before the exam. Move to full timed papers in the final 2–3 weeks. Complete at least 3 full papers. Always mark using the official mark schemes and use your results to target further revision.
