Essay Planning Strategies
Structure your essay plans quickly and effectively
Why Planning Matters
Students who spend 2–3 minutes planning their essay before writing consistently produce more focused, better-structured responses than those who dive straight in. A plan prevents you from repeating yourself, ensures you cover the full range of the question, and gives you a roadmap that keeps you on track under time pressure.
Examiners consistently report that the weakest essays are those without a clear structure. A brief plan costs you 2–3 minutes of writing time but can move your response up an entire mark band by improving coherence and focus.
Planning Methods
-
1
The 3-point plan — Identify three distinct points or arguments that answer the question. For each, note one quote and one technique. This gives you three focused paragraphs plus an introduction and conclusion.
-
2
The chronological plan — Track how the theme or character develops across the text: beginning, middle, end. This naturally shows development and change, which examiners reward.
-
3
The spider plan — Write the question keyword in the centre. Branch out to related ideas, quotes, and methods. Circle the three strongest branches — those become your paragraphs.
-
4
The argument plan — For questions using “how far do you agree” or “to what extent”, plan: two paragraphs supporting the statement, one paragraph challenging it, then a nuanced conclusion.
What a Good Plan Looks Like
A plan should take no more than 3 minutes. Here is an example for a 30-mark Macbeth essay on ambition:
| Paragraph | Point | Quote | Technique |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ambition introduced through supernatural | “brave Macbeth” / “Stars, hide your fires” | Imperative, light/dark imagery |
| 2 | Ambition corrupts morality | “full of scorpions is my mind” | Metaphor, mental turmoil |
| 3 | Ambition leads to isolation and destruction | “tale told by an idiot” | Nihilistic imagery, tragic fall |
Practise planning without writing the full essay. Set a timer for 3 minutes, plan a response, then check whether your three points cover different aspects of the question. This is a high-efficiency revision activity you can do in spare moments.
