Past Paper Practice
The best preparation is the real thing
What the Research Says
Past papers are the most effective exam preparation tool. They familiarise you with question formats, time pressure, and command words. For Edexcel History, where timing is tight across both papers, practising under timed conditions is essential.
Step-by-Step Method
- 1Source past papers — Download from the Pearson/Edexcel website.
- 2Sit a full paper timed — Paper 1: 1h 15m. Paper 2: 1h 45m. No notes, no phone.
- 3Self-mark — Use the mark scheme. Note where you lost marks.
- 4Categorise errors — Knowledge gap? Technique gap? Timing gap?
- 5Target weaknesses — Use other techniques to address the gaps.
- 6Repeat — Do another paper in 1–2 weeks. Track improvement.
When and How Often
2–2.5 hours per cycle. Do at least 3 full papers before the exam.
Common Mistakes
- Not marking — The review is where the learning happens.
- Only recent papers — Use all available papers.
- Ignoring timing — If you always run out, practise speed strategies.
