Argument Planning

Plan 12-mark evaluation essays

What the Research Says

The 12-mark evaluation question is worth the most marks per question. Practising quick plans — for and against arguments with sources, including religious and non-religious views — builds the analytical skills needed without writing full essays every time.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Read a statement — E.g. “Only God can take a life. Evaluate this statement.”
  2. 2
Plan 2 agree points — At least one religious with a source.
  3. 3
    Plan 2 disagree points — Include a non-religious perspective.
  4. 4
Draft a conclusion — Your view + justification.
  5. 5
Time yourself — Under 3 minutes for the plan.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌
Always writing full essays — Plans are faster and build the same skills.
  • ❌
Forgetting non-religious views — The exam requires diverse viewpoints.
  • ❌
No sources in plan — Always note which quotes you would use.
