Ask why and how

What the Research Says

Ask “why?” about every religious teaching. Instead of memorising “Christians believe in the Trinity,” ask: “Why is the Trinity important?” and “How does it affect worship?” This builds the analytical thinking needed for 4 and 12-mark questions.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Read a teaching — E.g. “Muslims believe in Tawhid (oneness of God).”
  2. 2
Ask WHY — Why is Tawhid the most important belief? Why does it lead to the rejection of shirk?
  3. 3
Ask HOW — How does Tawhid influence daily life? How does it shape worship?
  4. 4
    Write answer — Without notes.
  5. 5
Connect — Link to other beliefs: prophets, Qur’an, Day of Judgement.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌
Surface questions — Ask WHY and HOW, not just WHAT.
  • ❌
Stopping too soon — Each answer should generate a new question.
  • ❌
Not connecting — Link teachings across topics.
