Build a bank of key quotes

What the Research Says

Sources of authority are essential for AQA RS. Having a bank of key quotes memorised means you can deploy them confidently in 4 and 12-mark answers. Flashcard-based study (Kornell, 2009) is one of the most efficient ways to memorise specific text.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Collect key quotes — Aim for 3–5 per topic from sacred texts and scholars.
  2. 2
Write flashcards — Quote on one side; meaning + application on the other.
  3. 3
Test daily — Go through the pack. Sort into know/don’t know.
  4. 4
Focus on ‘don’t know’ — Repeat these more frequently.
  5. 5
Apply in practice — Write sentences using each quote in exam-style contexts.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌
Too many quotes — Quality over quantity. 3–5 per topic is enough.
  • ❌
Memorising without understanding — You must know what the quote means and how to apply it.
  • ❌
Not using them in practice — Write them into exam answers regularly.
