Retrieval Practice for Science

Test yourself on scientific facts and processes from memory

What It Is

Retrieval practice means recalling scientific information from memory without looking at your notes. This strengthens the memory trace far more effectively than passive re-reading. For Edexcel Combined Science, you need to recall definitions, equations, practical methods, and explanations across biology, chemistry, and physics — retrieval practice builds this fluency.

How to Do It

  1. 1
Pick a topic — Choose one area (e.g. “Cell Biology” or “Atomic Structure”). Keep it focused.
  2. 2
Study for 5 minutes — Read through definitions, diagrams, and key facts.
  3. 3
Close everything and brain dump — Write down every definition, equation, process, and fact you can remember.
  4. 4
Check and correct — Open your notes and highlight what you missed. Those gaps become priority topics.
  5. 5
Repeat after 2–3 days — Combine with spaced repetition for maximum retention.
