Elaborative Interrogation

Ask why and how

What the Research Says

Ask “why?” and “how?” about H&C facts. Instead of memorising “the danger zone is 5–63°C,” ask: “Why is this temperature range dangerous?” and “How do chefs prevent food staying in it?” Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated this moderate-to-high utility.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Read a key fact — E.g. “Protein is needed for growth and repair.”
  2. 2
Ask WHY — Why does the body need protein for growth?
  3. 3
Ask HOW — How does a chef ensure sufficient protein in a menu?
  4. 4
Write answer — Without notes, then check.
  5. 5
Connect — Link protein to other nutrients, dietary needs, menu planning.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌
Surface questions — Ask WHY, not just WHAT.
  • ❌
Stopping too soon — Keep asking deeper questions.
  • ❌
Isolated facts — Always connect to other topics.
