Past Paper Practice

The best preparation is the real thing

What the Research Says

Past papers are the most effective preparation. They build familiarity with WJEC question formats, command words, and time pressure. Practice testing under exam conditions improves performance more than any other strategy (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).

Step-by-Step Method

  1. 1
Source papers — Download from the WJEC website.
  2. 2
Timed paper — 90 minutes, no notes.
  3. 3
Self-mark — Use mark schemes. Note where you lost marks.
  4. 4
Categorise errors — Knowledge, technique, or timing?
  5. 5
Target weaknesses — Address gaps with other techniques.
  6. 6
Repeat — Track improvement over time.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌
Not marking — Review is where learning happens.
  • ❌
Only recent papers — Use all available.
  • ❌
Ignoring timing — Practise speed on low-mark questions.
